Custom Gates & Matching Fencing in Bethlehem, PA
A gate is the part of a fence people actually touch. It hangs its weight on two hinges, swings or rolls thousands of times and takes the worst of the weather at the end of the drive. We build driveway and entry gates to fit your opening, your style and your fence, whether that means a new gate with matching fence sections or a gate tied into the fence line you already have.
Every custom gate starts with the opening: the width between posts, the slope across it, what the posts are made of and whether the gate will be automated now or later. A gate built ready for an operator, with a stiff frame and the right hinge posts, saves rework if you add automation down the road.
Materials Compared
How the four common gate materials hold up to Pennsylvania’s freeze-thaw winters, salted roads and humid summers:
| Material | Durability in PA winters | Maintenance level | Style options |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood (cedar or hardwood) | Good if the posts drain and the end grain is sealed. Wood moves with the seasons, so hardware loosens and leaves can rack out of square. | Highest: oil, stain or paint every few years, plus hinge and latch checks. | Board-on-board privacy, Z- and X-braced farm gates, arched tops with spindles. |
| Aluminum | Will not rust, and a powder-coated finish shrugs off road salt. Thin sections can dent. | Low: rinse off salt in spring and check the hinges. | Picket and ornamental designs, flat panels, horizontal slats. |
| Steel | The strongest. Galvanized and powder-coated steel stands up to salt and freeze-thaw for many years; paint-only steel rusts at welds and scratches. | Low to moderate: touch up chips before rust spreads under the finish. | Wrought-iron looks with finials and scrolls, estate gates, palisade and security gates. |
| Vinyl (PVC) | No rot or rust, but it turns brittle in deep cold, and a wide leaf needs a metal frame inside or it sags. | Low: wash it, and check the frame and hinges. | Privacy, picket and ranch-rail designs to match vinyl fencing. |
Close to a salted road, metal gates need a real coating system, not just paint. Under trees and in damp corners, wood needs air under the bottom rail and posts that shed water. In the open sun of a newer subdivision, dark finishes and solid panels get hot and move more.
Gate Styles From Our Job Photos
Six looks from our gallery, from rustic to modern. Any of them can be built to a different width, height or color.
Matching the Fence
Fencing integration means the gate and the fence read as one: the same material and color, top rails that line up, posts of the same size, and a gate height that matches the fence on each side or steps down on purpose. With a new fence and gate together, that is designed in from the start.
When the fence is already there, we match what can be matched and tell you plainly where an exact match isn’t possible, such as a faded stain or a vinyl profile that is no longer made. Then you can decide whether to replace a section or two for a clean transition.
What Drives the Cost of a Custom Gate?
Pick the options closest to what you have in mind. The result shows how each choice weighs on the cost and where you could save. It shows no prices: those come from a written estimate after we measure.
Your result appears here: a relative cost level from 1 (simplest) to 5 (most involved) and what is behind it.
Custom Sizing, Matching and Lead Time
Can you build a gate for an odd-sized opening?
Yes, that is the point of custom work. We measure the opening at the top and the bottom (posts are rarely perfectly plumb), the slope across the drive and the clearance needed under the gate, then build to fit. On a sloped drive a gate can be stepped, raked to follow the grade, or hung on rising hinges.
Can you match my existing fence?
Usually. Send photos of the fence and, if you know them, the material and who put it in. Wood can be matched in style and stained close. Aluminum and steel can often be matched exactly when the profile is still made. Vinyl depends on whether the same profile is still available, and if an exact match isn’t possible, you will hear that before anything is ordered.
How long does a custom gate take?
Material and finish matter more than size. A wood gate built from stock lumber moves fastest; powder-coated aluminum and steel wait on the coating; automation adds the operator and the wiring; and concrete work can wait out the coldest weeks of winter. You get a realistic timeline with the estimate.
Should I automate the gate now or later?
If an opener is likely one day, build the gate ready for it now: a stiffer frame, proper hinge posts and a conduit under the drive are much easier to include in the build than to retrofit. See automatic gate installation.
Have an opening that needs a gate?
Tell us the width, the material you have in mind and whether you want it automated. We will measure and give you a written number.
